Level 4 - Online Engineering Course Unit

Unit Aim

The aim of this online engineering course unit is to introduce you to the basics of structural mechanics and dynamics. Mechanical engineering is a multi-disciplinary subject that applies accepted engineering principles to the design, development and analysis of structures, machines, systems and processes. The knowledge and application of these mechanics and dynamics principles is used by engineers for the design, analysis and production of machines, systems, vehicles and processes in use today.

Therefore, it is essential that all mechanical engineers have a good working knowledge of the under-pinning principles of the subject.

This unit introduces you to the fundamental laws and applications of mechanics and dynamics and how to apply this knowledge to find solutions to a variety of mechanical engineering problems.

You will be introduced to mechanical engineering methods and techniques to analyse and solve problems within an engineering context.

During this unit, you will cover the below four learning outcomes:

LO1: Quantify the effects of mechanical loads in static engineering systems
LO2: Quantify the effects of loads in dynamic systems
LO3: Quantify and describe fundamental principles relating to machines and power transmission systems
LO4: Quantify and describe fundamental principles relating to vibration of structures
