05 Manufacturing Engineering Principles
Level 4 - Online Engineering Course Unit
The aim of this online engineering course unit is to introduce you to the basics of manufacturing engineering principles. Manufacturing engineering is a multi-disciplinary subject that applies accepted engineering principles to the design, development and analysis of manufacturing systems, tooling, systems and processes.
The knowledge and application of these principles is used by engineers for the design, analysis and production of machines, systems, tooling and processes in use today. Therefore, it is essential that all engineers have a good working knowledge of the under-pinning principles of the subject.
This unit firstly introduces you to the different types of manufacturing processes. From primary (material shaping) processing, to secondary machining, and material removal processes. Followed by advanced manufacturing processes, such as 3D-printing/additive manufacture.
The unit will then teach you the fundamental laws and applications of mechanical engineering and how to apply this knowledge to find solutions to a variety of mechanical engineering problems.
Students will be introduced to mechanical engineering methods and techniques to analyse and solve problems within an engineering context.
During this unit, you will cover the below four learning outcomes:
LO1: Classify and describe primary, secondary, and advanced manufacturing techniques
LO2: Quantify the effects of mechanical loads in static engineering systems
LO3: Quantify the effects of loads in dynamic systems
LO4: Quantify and describe fundamental principles relating to machines and power transmission systems
