08 Manufacturing Systems and Lean Manufacturing

Level 4 - Online Engineering Course Unit

Unit Aim

The aim of this online engineering course unit is to introduce you to the basic concepts of manufacturing systems, including key elements of a system such as quality, cost, and delivery.

The unit will cover the philosophy of lean manufacturing and waste identification, and how this is embedded within modern day manufacturing organisations.

The unit will cover the origins of lean manufacturing systems, and how these have evolved into modern day practises, including an introduction to the ‘toolbox’ of process improvement tools.

Finally, the unit will cover the foundations of Total Production Maintenance. The main reasons for machine breakdowns, the ‘six big losses’, and how manufacturing organisations include Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) into their operating systems, and introducing the concept of Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).

Learning Outcomes

During this unit, you will cover the below four learning outcomes:

LO1: Analyse the principles of a manufacturing production system and the role of manufacturing engineers
LO2: Examine the lean manufacturing philosophy
LO3: Examine lean manufacturing systems, from conception to modern day practises
LO4: Analyse the ‘toolbox’ of process improvement tools
