Level 5 - Online Engineering Course Unit

Unit Aim

The aim of this online engineering course unit is to introduce you to the principles of aircraft concept design synthesis and aerospace manufacture.

You will examine the overall design process before undertaking a design exercise where you will be encouraged to explore the variety of aircraft configurations.

You will then select an appropriate configuration to satisfy a given design brief. You will then be guided through a simulated design synthesis process which will involve you selecting and calculating various design parameters to satisfy a given design brief. Your design activities will focus on the propulsion and wing design.

Finally, you will examine the principles of manufacturing that are specific to the aerospace industry.

Learning Outcomes

During this unit, you will cover the below four learning outcomes:

LO1: The learner understands the process of aircraft design and can select an appropriate aircraft configuration
LO2: The learner will be able to collate relevant aircraft design data and select solutions for aircraft propulsion
LO3: The learner will be able select and calculate solutions for aircraft wing design
LO4: The learner understands the principles of manufacturing in the aerospace industry
